Kia ora e te whānau,

We are halfway through this ten-week term, and the days are getting slightly longer, as is the excitement of summer heading our way.

New School Outdoor Tables:

A huge thank you to Bob and Graham for making our new outdoor tables. They are fantastic! We love how sturdy they are and how great they look around our kura.

Illness and Sickness is All Around Us!

There are plenty of bugs going around at the moment, with kura around the motu experiencing high absence rates. Just a timely reminder that if your tamariki are unwell, please keep them at home. We also ask that you notify the kura by 9.30am if they will be absent. Please text or call 027 304 8629.

As we head into the weekend, we hope you enjoy some time to relax, stay warm, soak up the sunshine, and spend quality time with whānau and friends.

Our newsletter is attached.

Kia ora e te whānau,

What a beautiful run of winter weather we've been enjoying! While the mornings have been cool and crisp, they've given way to stunning sunny days, making winter in the bay a real pleasure.

Today our tamariki are heading to the Gaiety Theatre to enjoy Akaroa Area School's production of School of Rock. We know they'll have a fantastic time watching the talented cast and supporting our local area school.

A huge thank you goes to Nick Thacker for the incredible work he has done around our kura. Nick has repositioned the post and rail fence to the front of the school bund and completed the deer fencing at the back of the school. The improvements have made a real difference, and our grounds are looking fantastic. We are very grateful for your time, hard work, and generosity, Nick.

Co-opted Board Member:

The Okains Bay School Board met on Tuesday 21 July and has made the decision to co-opt Amour Ryan back onto the Board. We warmly welcome Amour and thank her for their willingness to support our kura during this difficult time. We look forward to the experience, knowledge, and commitment you will bring as we continue to work together for the benefit of our tamariki and wider school community.

As we head into the weekend, we hope you all enjoy some time to relax, keep warm, make the most of the sunshine, and spend quality time with whānau and friends.

Update from community members working on the potential new community facility for Okains Bay:

With the recent article in the June 12 Akaroa Mail titled “Demolition recommended for Okains Bay Hall” it seems a good time to update everyone on our progress with moving the former Okains Bay Primary School Building to Sefton Park. This was one of the community proposals alluded to in the article, and the most supported as a new community facility following our community meeting 16th September 2025.

Since then, we have sought support from relevant stakeholders and made submissions to, and given presentations in support of, the Christchurch City Council Draft Annual Plan and the Community Board Plan.

From this, the advice is to build a feasibility study and work on a funding pathway, initial outlay being for Resource Consent.

We need to demonstrate a potential for 6 months (or more) of usage from repeat bookings such as weekly classes, monthly meetings, quiz nights, pot luck dinners, birthday parties, etc.

If a community facility in Okains Bay is important to you, please let us know why and when you would like to use it,  including events since hall closure last year, so we can start building a picture indicating our need. Please email reagan.knapp@gmail.com at your earliest convenience with your ideas.

Many thanks!

Rata Reagan, Judy T, Carol L
